Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam

English:
After getting my visa for Vietnam back in Phnom Penh, I took a bus crossing the border into Vietnam and from there straight to Ho Chi Minh City, which is still called Saigon by locals and tourists alike.
I really like Saigon, especially when compared to Phnom Penh. You can actually walk along the river, the city is better maintained in general and more greenery to let you breath a little easier.
I went on a day trip to the Cu Chi tunnels, tried crawling through one of those tunnels for a 100 meters, but exited the tunnel after half that, recognizing that my physique hardly makes me tunnel rat material.
Then, in the spirit of experiencing new things, I used a Kalashnikov AK-47 at the attached shooting range.
And of course, watched 15 minutes of vintage Viet Cong propaganda film. Propaganda is omnipresent around here. Uncle Ho wherever you go.

Deutsch:

Phnom Penh, Cambodia

English:
My next stop was Phnom Penh. The city was not one of my favourites, being a bit boring in layout and apart from that rather chaotic and run-down. Mandatory visiting here was the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum a.k.a. S-21, a former school turned interrogation prison where merciless acts of torture and killing had been committed by the Khmer Rouge, all because of the insanity and delusions of one man who by then was known as Pol Pot.
After this we went to Choeung Ek, one of the many Killing Fields in Cambodia. It is a gruesome sight, but at least it is remembered.
Next to all this, I found one thing quite shocking: Despite the revelation of the Cambodian genocide after 1979, for over a decade the Khmer Rouge continued to be recognised by the UN as part of the rightful government of Cambodia.

Deutsch:

Siem Reap, Cambodia

English:
From Si Phan Don I travelled back to the mainland and crossed into Cambodia by bus, going straight to Siem Reap. On the next day I visited Angkor. First Angkor Wat, then Angkor Thom, Preah Khan and of course the beautiful Ta Prohm. And many other locations. The Angkor complex is amazingly huge.
The next day I relaxed, and the day after that I went back at 5 in the morning to see the sun rise above Angkor Wat and see some more locations, making good use of the 3 day ticket I bought.

Conclusion: Angkor is definitely a must see if one is in Cambodia.

Deutsch:

English:
My last stop in Lao was Si Phan Don. That translates to "4000 Islands". It is the last section of the Mekong before it reaches Cambodia, there the river is several kilometers wide and on it are literally thousands of small and medium sized islands.
I was mostly on Don Khon and Don Det, both a few kilometers long. As there is not much to do, I relaxed and when I got bored I hiked around the islands, had a look at flora, fauna and landscape.
One historic day I got up at 2 in the morning, went to a nearby restaurant and joined a few locals to watch the football finale. World champion, hell yeah! :)

Weltmeister, hell yeah! :)

Vientiane, Laos

English:
After Vang Vieng I went to Vientiane, the capital of Lao. Only took 6 hours by bus, and only took one spare tire.
I was surprised by the fact that the city is right next to the Mekong, and on the other side of the river, maybe 80 meters away, you can see Thailand.
I only stayed two days, and did not do a lot. I visited the National Museum to see some information of the history of Lao, laced with a lot of propaganda, as was expected.
Then I visited the COPE Visitor Center, an organisation manufacturing prosthetics and informing about the ongoing problem of UXO (unexploded ordnance) in Lao. It was not easy to see all this. Hundreds of people are killed or mutilated every year by UXO, and it is shocking to understand how countries like the U.S. are still refusing to sign the treaty against the use of cluster munitions.
Below is a documentary about the disposal of UXO in Lao. Definitely worth watching.

Deutsch:
Definitiv sehenswert.

Vang Vieng, Laos

English:
After Luang Prabang I went to the little tourist hell-hole known as Vang Vieng.
But since it is still raining season, and so tourism is low, it was quite enjoyable.
I went kayaking, tubing into a water filled cave and finally tubing down the Nam Song River.
The cave tubing was amazing, sadly no photos, as I honestly did not want to introduce my camera to water.
For those who don't know what tubing is: Just take an oversized inner tube, sit on it and float down a river.

Deutsch:

Luang Prabang, Laos

English:
From Chiang Rai I took a bus to the border and crossed into Laos (correctly pronounced 'Lao').
The Lao People's Democratic Republic is one of the few remaining Marxist-Leninist socialist countries in the world. You can still see the influence of the French colonisation, which shows in the architecture and French being the official second language, before English.

After a two day boat trip on the Mekong River I arrived in Luang Prabang. It is a beautiful small town next to the river, has lots of trees, a hill and many small monasteries and temples.
Yesterday I visited Kuang Si Falls, a beautiful place of connected waterfalls and pools of blue water. Refreshingly cool water to swim in.
Next to the waterfall is a bear rescue center where they have Asian black bears saved from poachers.

Deutsch:
